Appreciate the little you have while you still can

Dissatisfaction, complaints, anger, jealousy and selfishness all lead a person into being self-centred and not to consider other peoples’ opinions because to them only their personal gains matter. One would find themselves in a situation where he or she fails to communicate with his or her family member because of past experiences. This leads to that person holding a lifelong grudge against the family member and the person often opts to either hate or not honour the family member because of past doings which most of the time are done but the family member is unaware of. Instead of being selfish, the person should rather speak to that family member and make them aware of their wrongdoings than keeping it to himself/herself. “You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them,” Archbishop Desmond Tutu reminds us of the wealth one can ever have in this world; FAMILY. One never realizes how lucky he or she is until he/she gets to get an opinion from close ones with regards to being selfish and not appreciating the little God has blessed them with.

Relationships between a person and his or her siblings and parents often lack as a result of poor communication between one another. In my opinion, it is unhealthy for one to hold unnecessary grudges against a family member or anyone for that matter as it could become a curse to your life. We aim to live a good spiritual lifestyle, but that lifestyle is not in good terms if one holds a grudge over another. You should always keep a good relationship with everyone around you and be easy to forgive those who have done you wrong, for we always ask the Lord to ‘…forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us’. This saying of letting the past be the past should always come to mind whenever you experience difficulties between you and someone close to you.

Instead of being rude to parents because they were not able to give you a lifestyle that your friend was living while you were growing up, you should seek to appreciate them for you are that respected person in everyone’s eyes because of those very parents. So I would urge you to always honour your parents because they had to go through difficult times to make sure that you don’t go to bed hungry, that you are always clothed and that you get decent education. Also, appreciate everyone around you and every little thing around you because those are God’s gift to help shape your future. While you still can, take time to say ‘thank you’ to each and every person who has helped you become the person you are. And do not forget to also give thanks to God for all the things He has blessed you with.

Forgive and you shall be forgiven. Appreciate and you shall receive blessings.
